It is the second largest employer in Australia and more of its employees work full time than in any other industry.

The industry has been actively reshaping itself over the last decade and has embraced new technologies, innovation; more efficient production practices and become increasingly export focussed. Around 70% of the companies in the manufacturing and engineering sector are either direct exporters or suppliers to an export company.

Measured on economic growth and productivity performance the industry is entering the new millennium not as a smokestack industry, but one which is arguably more important to the national economy than ever before. While many people who work in this industry are highly skilled and qualified, many more have no qualification at all and are classed as semi skilled using skills developed and honed in the workplace. However the industry is also experiencing very high demand for skilled workers and skilled workers can make all the difference between failure and success. So why not skill your own workforce and reap the benefits that this offers.
